Rabati Castle is a fortress built in the 9th century. The fortress has been destroyed and seized by enemies many times, as a result, the place has become a dwelling for different cultures and religions, which you can sense deeply absorbed in the walls of the fortress.
The first mosque in Rabati was built by Ottomans in 1752.
In 2012, a reconstruction of the fortress took place and it became like a small town. Rabati is not only a historical monument, but a cultural city center, too. You can see the church, mosque, synagogue, museum, park, various tourist shops, and hotels while traveling back in time and feeling like you’re a resident of an ancient town.
Your exploration continues in Vardzia, which is another gem of Samtskhe-Javakheti. Dating back to the 12th century, it’s a cave city that stretches along the cliff for approximately about 500 meters, and is up to nineteen tiers.
There, you can see the church of the dormition dating back to 1180, the golden age of Queen Tamar, and aged paintings on the wall. A fascinating fact about the place is that five monks still live in the mountain, and every morning at 7 am they ring the church bell in the high arch. The cave city is wonder waiting to be explored by you.
